Basic Bonsai Techniques

Proper bonsai care involves what you could call some basic bonsai techniques? And proper bonsai techniques come down to some several simple do's and don'ts.

DON'T: Prune look to your bonsai every day, or every week or every ever month. While pruning is a basic bonsai technique there's not need to get carried away. Bonsai trees only need a significant pruning at most twice a year. With maybe some tune-up pruning or pinching back every two or three weeks during the growing season to keep it in shape.

DO: Make sure you check your bonsai every day to see if needs water. One of the most crucial of the basic bonsai techniques, get below the surface a bit and check the soil with your finger. You'll need to water more often when it warmer or the plant is in it's growth spurt. Less when it's dormant or it's cool.

On the other hand…
DON'T: Over-water your bonsai. Bonsai roots are a terrible thing to waste on root rot. Which is nearly always fatal too.

DO: Protect your bonsai from Mother Nature, i.e. burning sunlight, gusting winds, destructive hail. Especially true after a pruning session.

DON'T: Buy a bonsai unless you can identify it. How can you deliver proper bonsai care if you don't know what you've got and so by default don't know what to do for it?

DO: Pick a newbie friendly tree. The Bonsai Site conducted a survey to identify the best ones. Survey Said…Juniper and Chinese Elm were best for those living in the Northern Hemisphere. While the Ficus was the choice for those in the Southern. All have a forgiving nature and can survive a reasonable amount of neglect.

DON'T: Forget bonsai are not houseplants. So avoid leaving your tree inside for more than a few days at a time unless it is a tropical bonsai that does not need a dormant period.
