Trunk Thickening TricksOkay so I'd hope the term "bonsai trunk chop" is no longer a foreign phrase to you. Or at least you are starting to get your head around it right?
This is why you'd leave a large "sacrificial" branch (any branch that comes off laterally - low on the trunk) below the primary branch. The idea is to fatten the lower trunk beneath the sacrificial branch. Then too, an ancient trunk thickening trick was to beat the trunk with bamboo canes. Sounds crazy I know. But there's science behind it. You see, the idea was to separate the phloem from the cambium layer. Forcing the tree to fill in the space. Viola - a thicker trunk! The way to do that today is with smooth not serrated bonsai pliers. Gently as possible grip the trunk and twist carefully just a bit to loosen the bark from the wood. Be sure to take care not to rip or crinkle the bark. With practice you'll master this trunk thickening tactic as well. Giving you three trunk thickening techniques to work with.
