Chinese Elm
Juniper
Ficus benjamina

Apple and crabapple
Maples
Pines
The first three are good candidates as beginner bonsai trees. Pines of any sort are not good for a person new to bonsai since they grow slowly

As you can see bonsai trees can be evergreen or deciduous, flowering or not, in a grove or solo, inside or outside, set out on or over rocks, or in small areas. So there are many types of bonsai trees.
Bonsai is an art form. The purpose is to grow the trees on a smaller scale in small, flat boxes or pots. To miniaturize and mold what mother nature makes big and wild.
BONSAI TIP: The three modes of bonsai are trunk, branch, and root. The trunks may be crooked or straight. The branches may seem to be going in one direction. Roots may be seen growing be over rocks, deadwood, or above the soil even.
